Google prepares its first orbital test of AI chips under Project Suncatcher

Google is testing whether space could eventually become part of the physical infrastructure used to run AI.

Google said it would launch a prototype satellite for the first in-orbit test of Project Suncatcher, a research effort exploring AI computing in space.

The concept is to use solar-powered satellites carrying AI hardware and network them together, potentially taking advantage of abundant solar energy while avoiding some terrestrial constraints.

Why it matters

AI's expansion is increasingly constrained by power, cooling, land and grid capacity. Even if orbital data centers remain years away, Google's willingness to test the idea shows how strategically important the infrastructure bottleneck has become.
