Researchers film a humpback apparently tending to its stillborn calf

A mother repeatedly returned to her dead calf for hours in what may be the first documented post-mortem attendance of this kind in a humpback whale.

Researchers documented a female humpback staying near and repeatedly returning to the body of her stillborn calf off Australia’s Gold Coast.

Why this is wild

Similar behaviors have been seen in dolphins and killer whales, but this appears to be the first detailed scientific documentation in a humpback whale.

Important caveat

Scientists do not claim they can prove the whale was grieving in the human sense. The behavior could reflect grief-like emotion, maternal attachment, confusion or instinctive caregiving.

IDP Education jumps 20% after rejecting Blackstone's sweetened takeover bid

Shares of Australian education company IDP Education jumped about 20.7% after the company rejected a revised takeover proposal from Blackstone.

Blackstone offered A$2.50 per share, a 56% premium to IDP's September 8 close, but IDP's board said the offer still undervalued the business.

The rejection increased speculation that Blackstone—or another buyer—could return with a higher offer. The move came even though IDP's recent financial results have been weak, with lower international-student demand weighing on revenue and profit.

Byron Bay’s quieter neighbor lands on Lonely Planet’s 2027 Best in Travel list
